Gemotions

The buffet table seemed a universe away, a tantalizing escape route. David watched the people milling about, the easy laughter and relaxed conversation a stark contrast to his internal turmoil. He felt a sharp pang of envy, a burning sensation in his chest.

He took a large gulp of water, the cold liquid doing little to soothe his nerves. His jaw clenched. He was supposed to be the eloquent one, the one who could speak with grace and wit. But right now, his mouth felt like it was full of cotton.

He caught his mother’s eye, and she gave him an encouraging nod. He forced a smile, knowing it probably looked strained. He closed his eyes for a moment, picturing the speech he had prepared. He hoped he could get through this without completely falling apart.
